Learning About Septic Services

Welcome to my site. My name is Jorge. The septic company sent a notice to my home recently about pumping out the tank. After living in my home for a few years, it was time to service the septic tank to keep it in good condition for years afterward. I watched in awe as the septic truck cleared the tank and restored the function of the system. I will use this site to discuss the process of servicing the septic tank. I will also talk about repairs commonly performed on the septic components. I hope you will visit often to learn more.

What to Do If Your Septic Tank Overflows

Rose Austin

An overflowing septic tank is one of the most serious plumbing emergencies you could have. Not only is the overflowing tank an eyesore, but it also creates an incredibly unhygienic condition. The foul water may end up inside your basement, in your garden, or even in your water if you use an underground well.

What you do immediately after such an event will be crucial for determining how serious the issue is and how much damage it causes.

Stop Using Water

An overflowing septic system is a sign that your septic tank is unable to hold any more water. The last thing you should be doing is sending more water down the drain.

Cease any and all uses of water inside the house until the problem can be identified and corrected. If there are appliances that use water, disconnect them or turn them off to prevent them from sending more water into the septic tank.

Do a Cursory Inspection

Once you've stopped the use of water in the house, the next thing you should do is inspect the problem to see if you can identify what the issue is. It's unlikely that you'll be able to perform a proper inspection, but you can still do some things to help:

  • Identify items that may be at risk so you can move them out of the way.

  • Confirm that the wastewater is actually coming from the septic tank and not a nearby pipe.

  • Put up temporary barriers to keep people away from the affected area or to keep the effluent away from certain areas.

Call an Expert

To handle a septic overflow, you'll need professional help in one way or another. For starters, unless you're feeling up to the task, you'll need to hire a sewage cleanup company. This is the most effective way of getting rid of the water that has already overflown from the septic tank. This may not be necessary if you noticed the overflow early enough.

You may also need to bring in a septic pumping company so they can drain the contents of the septic tank. If the problem is something like a blockage in the pipes leading into the drain field, this may be necessary to allow the experts to assess the problem. Once the septic tank has been emptied, you'll need someone who can get to the bottom of the problem. It's best to not try and figure the problem out on your own.
